Japanese classification society ClassNK says it is helping improve the efficiency of international shipping with the release of its new environmental efficiency analysis software, PrimeShip-GREEN/EEOI. The new software is a shipboard and web based software system for calculating and analysing the environmental efficiency of ships in service in line with the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Operational Index (EEOI). Class NK says that reducing maritime greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is one of the most important issues facing the industry today, and as part of these efforts, the IMO has investigated a number of technical measures, operational measures, and market based instruments for reducing emissions across the maritime industry. EEOI is one such operational measure that is expected to provide benefit to owners and operators in their efforts to lower vessel emissions. ClassNK’s new PrimeShip-GREEN/EEOI system is described as “a powerful analysis tool that makes it easy to determine a ship’s efficiency”. It provides information in accordance with the EEOI guidelines laid out in MEPC.1/Circ. 684. Using the program, ship owners and managers can visually assess the CO2 emission volumes of their fleet, compare the operational efficiency of ships within their own fleets, establish emission targets, and easily recognize the factors affecting operational efficiency. Class NK has tested PrimeShip-GREEN/EEOI in cooperation with a number of maritime companies. It now says that, as part of its efforts to assist the maritime industry in fight against GHG emissions, the new software will be provided free of charge to qualifying companies. The shipboard module for data entry and its web-based analysis module can be accessed by submitting an application via the Class NK website
