MANILA, Philippines – Singapore is planning to establish a Maritime Institute (MI) that would adopt a holistic approach to maritime education.
This was disclosed by Teo Chee Hean, Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense during the 25th anniversary of the Singapore Shipping Association's 25th anniversary.
Hean said the maritime institute is expected to drive research and development (R&D) in key areas such as green shipping, maritime logistics and operations, as well as marine and offshore engineering.
It will also attract renowned academics and researchers to Singapore, and groom the next generation of local maritime talent.
Hean said the Singapore MI will also coordinate the strategic activities of various maritime institutes and centers at local institutes of higher learning. (EHL)
