The first Magellan Academy of Shipping and Transport - MAST
In addition to the traditional maritime education for ship officers and engineers or shipping related courses for superintendents, MAST provides education for companies and individuals alike who want to enhance competencies in specific maritime fields like ships survey, ship crane operation, steel-loading procedures, marine insurance, hatch cover or engine design and in many other fields.
With the expansion of the availability of the internet aided by increasingly affordable IT solutions, MAST introduces a novel way of education which is either entirely e-platform based or a combination of distance learning and training centre sessions/examinations.
The mission of MAST is to offer education to everybody at affordable costs and to offer to companies at the same time a platform to monitor and evaluate the training status of each employee at real time.
MAST also offers an advanced way of communication between trainees themselves and with coaches via chat rooms, e-mails etc. Companies can broadcast important news to their employees and receive automatic notifications that the messages have been read.
MAST provides a knowledge encyclopaedia which can be enriched with information specific to company, vessels or equipment aimed at preventing mistakes from being repeated and to preserve knowledge for generations of seafarers yet to come.
MAST will further provide members with the possibility to appoint career coaches. Career coaches can direct and assist a student or a group of students and can be used as knowledge centre by ship crews in difficult situations.
MAST offers to companies and their employees, to students or to the interested individual a variety of distant learning material and classroom sessions, courses produced by the members of MAST - ship owners, suppliers, insurance companies, classification societies and many others, related to the shipping industry. MAST was founded by a number of companies who have the vision that this form of education will greatly contribute to the further increase in competence of everyone working in the shipping industry.
