GULF OF MEXICO: Modec's floating storage offloading vessel (FSO) Ta'Kuntah completed the offloading of 1 billion barrels of oil to 1,745 export tankers in August 2008. The FSO offloaded cargo to 42 tankers during the same month.
Ta'Kuntah is the first FSO to be deployed in the Gulf of Mexico. The FSO is owned and operated by Modec and leased to Pemex Exploration and Production. The vessel celebrated its 10 years of continuous operation on Sept. 14 of this year, with no incidents of oil pollution and 100 per cent uptime throughout its operation.
Modec's President and CEO Kenji Yamada said, "Many of the shore staff and the FSO's crew have been with the vessel for the entire 10 years of operation - their dedication is a huge factor in our success."
The FSO Ta'Kuntah is a converted ultra-large crude carrier and is capable of storing more than 2 million barrels of oil. The FSO is permanently moored in 80 metres (262 ft) water depth in the Cantarell Field in the Bay of Campeche off Mexico's Yucatan peninsula.
SOFEC designed, engineered and manufactured the mooring system, which consists of an external bow-mounted turret capable of withstanding 100-year hurricane conditions. The offloading system allows export tankers to moor either in tandem or side-by-side, both individually and simultaneously. The FSO is designed to handle 800,000 b/d of oil.
