Mumbai, Mar 31 (PTI) Expressing serious concern over the growing incidents of armed robbery and hostage taking by pirates off the Coast of Somalia, Maharashtra governor K Sankaranarayanan today said the safety of Indian seafarers must receive top priority.
The Governor hoped that the international community would step in and take decisive action to end piracy and hijacking vessels for ransom.
He was speaking at the inauguration of Merchant Navy week at Raj Bhavan.
Sankaranarayanan expressed satisfaction that India produces the best of seafarers in the world and contributes 6.5 per cent of the total seafarers of the world, who are manning Indian and foreign vessels with distinction, a Raj Bhavan release said.
The Merchant Navy week is to create public awareness of the shipping industry which accounts for more than 90 per cent of international trade by volume.
