Horizon Shipbuilding delivers crew boat

Horizon Shipbuilding Inc. has delivered the 182-foot aluminum crew boat Isla San Gabriel to a Mexican customer, part of a $17 million, two-vessel contract the Bayou La Batre shipbuilder won in early 2008. A sister vessel is scheduled for delivery in October, according to Horizon.

The massive crew boats are helping keep the shipyard's 240-person workforce busy as it looks for more work, said Horizon President Travis Short.

"Our short-term outlook looks real good, and long-term, if you're looking past two years, it also looks pretty good," Short said. "We're bidding on work that will certainly fill those blocks of time."

Horizon's employment peaked at about 270 just prior to the Aug. 7 delivery of Isla San Gabriel, and the shipyard is ramping up employment again as it prepares for delivery of the sister ship, Short said. The company hired 10 people this week and plans to add about a dozen more — machinists, electricians, pipefitters and welders — before September, he said.

Designed by Horizon and Castleman Maritime LLC of Kemah, Texas, Isla San Gabriel is the largest and most sophisticated crew boat ever constructed by Horizon. It is outfitted with a pair of main engines, each boasting 1,800 horsepower, and a positioning system capable of operating with precision in rough seas. It seats 30 passengers.

The crew boat and its sister vessel were ordered by Mexican maritime logistics provider TMM Division Maritima, which will lease them to Pemex, Mexico's state-owned petroleum company.

Horizon is also working on 11 140-foot and 120-foot river tow boats for Florida Marine Transporters of Mandeville, La., with options for more, Short said.

Horizon relies on foreign clients for a big portion of its order book. In 2009, the U.S. Small Business Administration honored the shipyard with its state Exporter of the Year award for delivering more than $60 million in exports to West Africa, Iraq and Mexico since 2002.

The company realized

$27 million in revenue in 2008 and expects a 10 percent increase this year.
