THE International Shipping Federation (ISF) has launched a short international DVD film to promote careers at sea. ISF says the film celebrates ISF’s centenary and has been made in conjunction with the IMO's ‘Go to sea!’ campaign. Translated into several languages, with the support of IMO, and ISF members, the film is intended to complement the careers promotion activities already being undertaken by national employers’ associations.
An ISF spokesperson says: “Although the contraction in world trade may have eased immediate pressures, ISF is very keen to emphasise the importance of companies recruiting sufficient numbers of new officers for the future. The new film seeks to explain careers in shipping to young people, emphasising how a career at sea is a stepping stone to an exciting career in one of the world’s most dynamic industries, and that a career at sea – although a fine career itself – does not necessarily mean a lifetime at sea.”
About 15,000 copies are being distributed internationally, free of charge, and are intended to be used during careers events, such as those organised with schools. The DVD version of the film is available in several languages: English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Greek, Italian, Russian and Spanish. Copies of ‘Careers in International Shipping’ can be obtained via ISF’s national member associations, or accessed at www.marisec.org . It has also been posted on http://www.youtube.com/.
