Master mariners to teach courses at Piri Reis University

Academicians who are also master mariners will teach courses at Turkey's first maritime higher education institution, Piri Reis University, which will open this September.

The rector of the university, Professor Osman Kamil Sağ, said the university would contribute to training academicians who are needed in the maritime field in Turkey. Piri Reis University, which was established by the Turkish Maritime Education Foundation (TUDEV) with the support of 7,500 shipping agents, is planning to admit its first students in the 2009-2010 academic year. The university will also accept 174 students into its vocational school's ship deck machinery department.
The university has prepared a project fill the gap of academicians in the maritime field in higher education. Sağ said the project, implemented by the Maritime Affairs Undersecretariat and the Higher Education Board (YÖK), will cost 8 million euros. He expalined that academicians specializing in maritime studies will be trained with this project.

The university aims to enroll between 6,000 and 7,000 students within the next two years. Sağ said the university, which also provides English classes, will work in cooperation with 51 universities from five continents. There are a total of 16 maritime graduate and undergraduate programs in Turkey, comprising nine higher education programs and seven vocational schools.
