The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s Master of Marine Engineering (MMarE) degree program, a distance-learning master’s program, begins its third year this September with a wide range of course offerings.
The MMarE program offers a unique opportunity for practicing marine engineering professionals to advance their technical education and careers while continuing in their current capacities. The MMarE courses focus on the application of advanced technical concepts and skills. Real-world problems are addressed, as well as the challenges facing designers, builders and operators of vessels and marine structures, and those involved in the design and manufacture of shipboard components.
The MMarE’s fall semester begins on September 8, 2008 and runs through December 19. Course offerings are: Computational Methods; Marine Propulsion Systems; Advanced Marine Materials; Internal Combustion Engine Analysis and New Technologies; Power Electronics; and Control Theory and PLC Applications.
The program’s spring semester, January 5, 2009 through April 18, will encompass: Advanced Marine Power Plants; Vibration of Marine Machinery and Structures; LNG Vessel Operation and Design Considerations; Electrical Power Systems; Marine Electrical Systems and Propulsion; Management of Shipbuilding and Repair; Reliability Engineering and Operations Research; Hydrostatics and Basic Hydrodynamics; and Marine Industry Policy.
Overall, the MMarE program offers a 36-credit combination of core and elective courses in which the concepts and designs available to the world market are discussed and analyzed. Through the use of a combination of synchronous and asynchronous distance-learning technologies, the program is accessible to all students with access to an appropriate home or office computer.
Applications for the MMarE’s 2008-09 program are now being accepted on a rolling admissions basis for the academic year that begins September 2008.
