Training on anti-maritime pollution held

Davao City (13 March) -- In keeping with the present-day sensitivities on environmental issues specifically on maritime pollution, a training on Anti-Maritime Pollution was held recently conducted by Golden Dragon International Inc., the PPA-licensed outfit tasked to provide services nationwide that are related to maritime wastes collection.

GDTI, founded in 2003, was granted the exclusive function to oversee the control of marine-based pollution.

The enactment of the Maritime Pollution Law or known widely as MARPOL is in accordance with the UN Convention Law of the Sea which the Philippines is among the signatories.

The conduct of the training is in support of the objectives of International Maritime Organization Convention Marpol 73/78 to reduce marine pollution by controlling or prohibiting illegal discharge of waste from ships and to ensure that ship-generated wastes are properly collected, treated and disposed of in environmentally sound ways and in accordance with existing standards and laws.

In the past, the Philippine Ports Authority has received reports that wastes on board vessels were dumped at open sea jeopardizing marine life and gravely threatening the already-threatened lives at sea.

In The Port Management office of Davao, Atty. Christian V. Santillan, Port Manager, have issued guidelines to all Shipping Companies/Agencies, Private Port Operators and Owners regarding compulsory disposal of garbage and wastes from the vessel into the Shore Reception Facility (SRF) installed in the port.

Held in Davao City, last Feb 13, 2009 the training was attended by GDTI PERSONNEL ships' agents and representatives Speakers include those from Philippine Coast Guard and MARINA; Engr. Alex Madamba of the Philippine Ports Authority also lectured on the Information and Education Campaign Program. (PPA/PIA XI)
