International Register of Shipping presents to Brazilian Naval School

Fuente: Prlog

International Register of Shipping Managing Director Mr. Said Nassif along with IRS Brazilian representative Mr. Castello Branco, this month were invited to address the Brazilian Naval School of merchant officers in Rio de Janeiro, presenting to newly graduated Port State Control Officers about Safety Management Systems (SMS) and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code.

SMS is the documented procedure for managing risks that incorporate operational and technical systems to ensure that vessels are maintained and operated safely, preventing maritime accidents and at the same time protecting the marine environment.

The system provides the wherewithal for companies and their vessels to comply with the ISM Code, and must be certified by the administration of the flag state.

“It was a highly successful meeting and presentation that I think proved beneficial to the Officers,” said IRS Managing Director Said Nassif. “Many of the Officers expressed interest in learning more about the Maritime Safety Management Systems Auditor Training Course. We believe that’s a testament to the skill set IRS brings to the maritime industry - we can provide training through our recently IRCA-approved Safety Management Systems Auditor Training Course.”

International Register Training Institute (IRTI) is an IRCA-approved division of the classification society International Register of Shipping (ISO 9000:2008 accredited company). With technical headquarters in Miami, FL, IRS provides classification, certification, verification, training and advisory services for ships under numerous flags.

IRTI training sessions are available in eight locations from Panama to Nigeria to India.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

The International Register of Shipping has more than 1,300 ships on its register, with a combined gross tonnage of 7.3 million tonnes.

It is currently authorized by 18 flag administrations to perform statutory certification in accordance with many of the International Maritime Organization's conventions. With 15 offices across the world and a presence in 90 countries through affiliated offices, the IRS has a truly global presence

It is an independent classification society without the patronage of any particular flag administration.

Also independent of the IACS, IRS acts with impartiality and objectivity as a self-regulating agency to the international marine industry, with the mission of serving the public interest as well as the needs of clients by promoting the safety and security of life, property and the natural environment.

The society does this by acting as a regulatory body governing the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related facilities.
