College campaigns to boost marine recruitment

To help tackle the continuing shortage one UK college has launched an advertising campaign to promote careers at sea and spread the news about its training facilities.

South Tyneside College has produced a television advert which highlights the benefits of working at sea, from the excellent pay and conditions to the adventurous lifestyle. As well as the television campaign, the College is using press and web based advertising, direct mail, posters and flyers to spread the word to young people about the benefits of choosing a career in the maritime industry.

The College hosted a marine open day earlier this month to talk to potential students about the benefits of a career at sea from those working in the industry. Would be students were also able to test out their sea legs on the College’s marine simulation unit.

Head of the Marine College at South Tyneside, Gary Hindmarch said, 'With potential earnings of up to £40k tax free and a chance to see the world, a marine career offers fantastic opportunities. We want to ensure that as many youngsters as possible are aware of the benefits and consider this as a viable career option.

'At the moment, skills shortages at sea mean that enthusiastic youngsters wanting a marine career are virtually guaranteed a job, so it’s a great time to sign up. Hopefully this campaign will help to boost the number of new recruits entering the industry and go some small way to tackling the current skills shortage.'

In addition to its recruitment campaigns, South Tyneside College also recently held its first ever ‘train the trainer’ Kongsberg Polaris simulator week to share knowledge with other operators around the world.

Cork Institute and pilots from Cork and the Tees visited the college to take part in the training, which included practical simulator sessions and hundreds of insider tips and advice collected over the past ten years of Polaris simulation use.

The simulator week was organised in response to the dozens of queries that the College receives about its simulator operations. South Tyneside College has been offering ship simulation training since the 1960s and therefore has many years’ experience of running successful simulation courses.
