The Saigon Central Container Port Company is now speeding up the construction of a container port capable of handling 1.5 million TEU, or 30 million tonnes of cargo, each year.

The Saigon Premier Container Terminal - the largest of its kind in Ho Chi Minh City - will be able to receive 50,000-tonne cargo ships.

The port will have a four-berth quay that is 950 long with the first two berths planned to start operating in 2008.

Designed by the Philippine firm Maunsell AEcom, the project is estimated to cost 3.81 trillion VND (239 million USD). It is being built on an area 40 ha in the Hiep Phuoc Industrial Zone along the western bank of Soai Rap river.

The project will also include a 480 sq.m container freight station (CFS), a 915 sq.m repair workshop and other facilities.
